VP8STI QRT ! JAN 25, 2016

Team_VP8STI
NEWS UPDATE @ 21:20Z - Nigel Jolly, Braveheart owner, declared an emergency and ordered the VP8STI team to cease all operations and return to the ship. A large ice floe that had broken away due to last night’s storm starts to block the entrance to the Bay where they were camped. There was strong potential for the ice floe to prevent Braveheart reaching them.
The Team is now safely aboard the Braveheart and they are moving away from Southern Thule Is. All equipment and personal gear is still on the island. They hope to return to camp site during next good weather window. Once they retrieve their equipment they will make a determination as to whether they can proceed to South Georgia to do VP8SGI as planned – VP8STI QRT !

VP8 DXpedition

South Sandwich DXpedition May Need to Go Off Air “Abruptly” Due to Weather

01/24/2016
The US East was not the only place to suffer a blizzard this weekend. The VP8 DXpedition now on South Sandwich reports it’s been hit by some serious winter weather that could curtail the team’s stay.
“Since early this morning, we have been experiencing blizzard-like conditions with strong winds and heavy snowfall,” DXpedition Co-Leader Paul Ewing, N6PSE, said January 24. “Some of our antennas have become damaged by the high winds, and the snowfall is making access to them very difficult. It is also increasingly difficult to refuel our generators.”
The VP8STI operators have been soldiering on through the adverse conditions. Ewing said the main concern, however, is the four tents housing them and their equipment. One already has suffered damage from the high winds.
We are in VHF communications with the Braveheart, and we are discussing contingency plans to abort or shorten the DXpedition, if safety requires,” Ewing said, pointing out that the Braveheart, the vessel that transported the DXpedition members to the island, has been unable to maintain its anchor position and was moving out to sea. Three stations are now active, Ewing said, adding, “we are becoming increasingly less confident that we can maintain this activity.”
“We hope that we can continue, but we feel the need to inform you that our activity may abruptly come to an end in the name of safety of our team and the crew of the Braveheart,” he said.
Ewing said the VP8STI team is doing its best “under extreme circumstances” to stay on the air. “This DXpedition has thoroughly tested each member physically, mentally and spiritually,” He said. “We pray for a safe return.”
VP8STI was scheduled to break down camp early this week and move to South Georgia Island for the second half of the massive DX undertaking. The VP8STI team has been on the air from Southern Thule Island since January 17. As expected, the pileups have been hectic. The DXpedition is hoping to spend 10 days on South Sandwich and on South Georgia.
To date the DXpedition has logged more than 48,000 contacts. The latest VP8STI South Sandwich logs have been posted on the ClubLog website. — Thanks toThe Daily DX

Update.. VP8STI & VP8SGI

Team_VP8STI
January 24 -  Since early this morning, we have been experiencing blizzard like conditions with strong winds and heavy snow fall. Some of our antennas have become damaged by the high winds and the snow fall is making access to them very difficult.  It is also increasingly difficult to re-fuel our generators.
Our biggest concern is our four tents, one of which has already been damaged by the high winds. We are in VHF communications with the Braveheart and we are discussing contingency plans to abort or shorten the DXpedition if safety requires.
The Braveheart is unable to maintain their anchor position and is moving out to sea. We are currently active on three stations however we are becoming increasingly less confident that we can maintain this activity. Please know that we are doing our best under extreme circumstances to make contacts with the global DX Community. This DXpedition has thoroughly tested each member physically, mentally and spiritually. We pray for a safe return.
We hope that we can continue however we feel the need to inform you that our activity may abruptly come to an end in the name of safety of our team and the crew of the Braveheart.
Best wishes from the Intrepid-DX Group VP8STI Team.

The last 18 months have seen considerable efforts and dialogue with various departmental offices in Bahrain, and we are now in a position to proudly announce that members of Bahrain Amateur Radio Group, led by Fawaz A92AA, will conduct a first ever activation of the Hawar Islands AS-202 – a new IOTA group which was added to the IOTA Directory in July 2014. All paperwork and permits are now in hand.
During the period April 28 to May 1, 2016, a dedicated team will put Hawar island on the air with the sole aim of giving this new IOTA to as many stations as possible. With up to 4 stations running simultaneously on CW, SSB and Digi your chance to work AS-202 is greatly enhanced.
Our website is now on line. Please visit www.a91hi.com for full details. We are also on Facebook and Twitter.
As with all unique projects, costs soon add up. To date the team have met all expenses including licensing costs, transportation fees, permits, accommodation for 4 nights stay/shelter in addition to general logistics costs.
If you would like to support our unique project please visit here. Thank you!
As the weeks progress we will issue more news updates.
