Aves Island (YV0) – Annual IOTA DXpedition Plans Morph into Visit to a Rare One

EXPEDICION A ISLA DE AVES 2016

Update!

YV0V News 18 August 2016

The Naval departure date for the much anticipated YX0V Aves Island DXpedition has been moved up. The YV team will depart Caracas, Venezuela at 8 AM local time on Saturday August 27th. This update comes from YX0V pilot station W4DTA/YV5DTA, Steve Romagni, who received word earlier today. As of the moment the team does not know which ship they will be boarding, which is important to know as this will give an idea of how long the travel time. Steve also notes that one of the team members "had to drop", however an alternate will replace him, so the team still includes 14 ops.

Update!
Radio Amateurs members of Radioaficionados de Venezuela (ARV) will be active from Aves Island, IOTA NA - 020, starting September 2016 (Plans are to depart 31 August 2016) as YX0V.
They will be QRV for about 7 - 10 days.
They will operate on 40 - 6m CW, SSB.
QSL via W4DTA, OQRS.

An unexpected invitation from the Venezuelan Navy gave rise to a DXpedition to Aves Island — Isla de Aves — (YV0), the current number 17 on the ClubLog DXCC Most Wanted List.
While trying to organize its annual IOTA DXpedition to Los Monjes Island (SA-015), members of the Asociación de Radioaficionados de Venezuela (ARV) and Grupo DX Caracas received the surprise Navy invite. Aves Island was last activated on February 13, 2007, by YW0DX.
Plans call for an August 31 departure with “a restricted number of operators,” to including both experienced and new operators from the Navy. The exact dates of operation aredependent on the Navy. The group will be on the air for up to 10 days as YX0V, with the full support of the Navy.
Despite the last-minute change of plans, a team has been chosen, as well as radios and antennas, and other logistics.
The tiny Aves Island is situated west of the Leeward Islands. It’s only about 1200 feet long and some 150 feet wide.

Oceania DX Contest

This year’s OCDX contest takes place on:
08:00 UTC Saturday 1st October to 08:00 UTC Sunday 2nd October 2016 (phone)
and
08:00 UTC Saturday 8th October to 08:00 UTC Sunday 9th October 2016 (CW)
The historic Oceania DX Contest (OCDX, originally the “VK/ZL contest”), one of the world’s oldest amateur radio contests, has been running for eight decades since the mid-1930s.
The contest is an annual competition to make phone and CW contacts between amateur radio stations in Oceania and DX (the rest of the world).  The fun takes place on the first and second full weekends in October every year, with separate 24-hour sections for phone (SSB) and CW (Morse code).
Last year’s event was a resounding success.  Participation from Oceaniawas markedly up on the previous year, with activity from 3D2, 9M6, DU, KH2, KH8, NH0, NH2, P29, TX3, V73 and V85 in addition to the usual stalwarts from VK, YB, KH6 and ZL. Remarkably, more than twenty newcontinental records were set in 2015.
This year, we know of at least 6 Oceania DXpeditions during the contest including VK9L Lord Howe Island (OC-004).
